As we embark on an exciting year ahead, the aerospace industry stands as a cornerstone of modern society, playing a crucial role in global connectivity, economic growth, and technological advancement.
From enabling the swift transportation of people and goods across continents, the defence of nations and to driving innovations that enhance the accessibility of space and tackle climate change, aerospace's impact is far-reaching and transformative. The Royal Aeronautical Society, with its legacy and unwavering commitment to excellence, continues to be a pivotal force in shaping this dynamic industry through sharing knowledge, and nurturing the next generation of aerospace professionals.
Reflecting on the past year, it is clear that we have navigated numerous projects and challenges, emerging stronger and more resilient. Our financial performance was commendable, with income rising by 7.1% compared to 2023, while costs were managed prudently, coming in under budget. The growth in paying membership by 8% and the significant increase in corporate partnerships income by 11.3% are noteworthy milestones.
We have also seen an impressive surge in several income streams including End Point Assessments at 19.5%, events at 33%, and venue hire at 5.3%. Notably, we delivered a small surplus against an anticipated deficit, reflecting our robust fiscal management that helped to facilitate the completion of our mortgage payoff for No.4 Hamilton Place and investment into a CRM and CMS transformation programme.
That success by the teams ensures a more relevant, engaging and valuable programme of activities and benefits can be accessed by members across our network. The revival of the Berlin-Brandenburg Branch and the positive developments across our divisions, highlight our expansive reach and impact.
Project Opine has begun to embed, fostering greater interaction and productivity among our specialist groups. Our engagement with esteemed figures such as the US FAA Administrator, UK CAA Chair, RAF's Chief of the Air Staff, and UK Aviation Minister Mike Kane MP underscores our influential presence in the aerospace sector. Moreover, our scholarly contributions have been significant, with seven papers released, enhancing our learned output.
Our social media following has grown substantially, with a 19% increase on LinkedIn and 9% on YouTube. The introduction of our monthly podcast on Spotify, Soundcloud, and YouTube has seen steady growth, further amplifying our voice and reach.
The launch of the Society’s Sustainability Strategy and the response to the UK’s Strategic Defence Review are pivotal initiatives that underscore our commitment to addressing critical issues. The introduction of the Next Generation Board and our impactful outreach activities, including RIAT and Farnborough, have significantly engaged young people, fostering the next generation of aerospace professionals.
The approval of the new Society Strategy marks a pivotal moment, enabling us to chart a forward-looking course, and this work will be progressed throughout 2025 and beyond.
Our progress would not be possible without the continued dedication and commitment of our members, volunteers and networks so we’re grateful for the knowledge and credibility that brings to our work. Together, we will continue to achieve great things and create a future where aviation and space technology continue to improve lives and protect the environment.
